Some favs

OK as promised some more favorite dresses that I like and why.  We designers are quirky that way!

Katherine1

Katherine is a designer of hand bags and we traipsed all over New York looking for just the right look.  Like a lot of us, she knew what she wanted, but really hadn't taken the time to "look".  So this was just time set aside to do that.  We found a top here, fabric there, silhouette here, and skirt there and combined all these pieces.  The family had an heirloom veil (first time I saw it, it fell apart in my hands - yikes! - a Major redo), and that was our only limitation.  Working with creative people is so much fun when we get to really expand and think outside the box.

Okay - here's the kicker on this dress.  We took the top off, and she has worn it with cocktail (easy to understand), but with jeans and just about everything she has.  It is that "go to" white top that goes with everything.  The bottom will be a christening gown (see here for the one I did for my family), with a glorious long train.  This is the best of all worlds.  Katherine's sisters are as independent as Katherine and all of them have their own style, so this dress wasn't going to rerun thing, and to have it used like this is wonderful.

What makes this dress so special is that the design became so versatile that Katherine used it in many different ways.  Not only did she  have a wedding dress, but with a top and christening gown.  When I was a burgeoning designer I never understood this, but as I've grown in my business, I love the idea of my clients using my designs in many different ways.  It displays the versatility and creativity behind each of my designs and makes the design much more practical.

What is an atelier?

No it's not the boat driver for those long gondolas in Venice.  Literally translated it means workroom...in reality, a studio which would hold all that it takes to create gorgeous things!  Crossing the threshold into my studio, I enter a world of limitless creativity.   I love making beautiful gowns.

Here are some of my more recent gowns.

This is a beauty...my only problem is that she ran a marathon about a month before the dress was to be worn - she dropped about 10 pounds.  To be young again and drop weight at just the mere mention of diet!  This was my "whipped cream" dress.  I started with a great bodice muslin and then but the skirt extra long and extra large with a "guide skirt" under the main skirt, ruche  the skirt into place where we wanted it.  Part of the fun I have with my girls is they get to watch the whole process come together.  Not only do they have the chance for input, but they also get to watch what goes into a beautiful gown.

Here's another

This was so much fun to do - I got carried away since it was for my niece and didn't have to mind a budget.  She is my muse as she allows me the freedom to do just about anything for her.  She is always so patient and sweet.  There are techniques I use with her that either are hard to express (to my clients), very new and edgy or very costly.  This is a technique called silk ribbon embroidery, and although it is costly (all done by hand), the hardest part is getting the beautiful ribbon.  I used silk taffeta, organza, satin and faille ribbons with pearls.

Well, that's enough for now.  I'll post more pictures later.  Also great stories of some of my girls.
