Why do we have a High Society Page (and no this isn't about the movie High Society - although it's an absolute hoot if you've never seen it)
And it's not really called the "High Society Page" either - mostly it's something like "Life" or "Parties" or whatever.
Well, for me why I like this page is that this covers the movers and shakers of a community and lets you know what's new, what's going on, what's in (hopefully) and most importantly for me, what they're wearing.
The editorial sections of the fashion magazines are filled with pictures that are there for one reason - to be so outrageous so as to 1.) be included by the magazine editors who have seen everything under the sun and bored to tear of most of it and 2.) to be cheap and free advertisement for the designer.
That's all well and good, but for me that doesn't do much for what's really being worn or what most of us would buy or wear.
That's where the society or parties pages come in.
(Yes, that's Lauren Hutton on the left - a party patron on the right - just liked the outfit!)
More pretty outfits.
You see why I look at the "society" or "party" page....it's for the fashions. These are fresh, new, up-to-date, modern, but fortunately none of them looks like or wants to emulate Lady GaGa. Now that's not to say Lady GaGa doesn't have her place, it's just that it's not most people's taste!
This is what occurred to me while I was so fascinated with the Royal wedding and writing a series of newsletters on them, and I wonder if it isn't a large part of why we all watch these things and are so "hooked"
From all the fashions from the wedding guests....
to the notorious who even wear beautiful clothes....
...you can get a ton of ideas of what to wear.
What all these people have done is go to the most expensive professionals and said, "I'm going to William's and Kate's wedding, and there's going to be a ton of publicity so I need the best looking thing you can put me in."
No tricks.
No gimmicks.
No trying to be the most outrageously dressed there (OK, some people can't resist it no matter what, but most don't) and the designer is going to get great publicity without looking outrageous.
These are the prettiest, most wearable clothes out there. Of course there's the natural curiosity about the rich and famous (and in England) the royals, but for me, this is the main reason I love these events.
We as sewists can learn so much AND get a bevy of great ideas from the most famous and talented designers out there, all for free.
so true, sometimes I wish they wouldn't even try to say anything in the articles and just have tons of pictures

The woman in ice blue is stunningly dressed. I have been wondering if Ms. Beckham is pregnant. In certain pics she seemed a bit more naturally voluptuous than normal and the dress showed none of her beautiful figure. One other observation L'eggs pantyhose was not invited to this wedding!

Bunny, Ms.Beckham is pregnant, looking so very beautiful--I desire to dress my daughters and grands the same. I love the "In Style" magazine for the pictures, also.

Nice ! My favourite is the royal bleu outfit with the "boat shape" hat ! So elegant. The neckline is divine.
